A crack in your windshield can impair your ability to see properly while you are driving, and it can also mean getting a ticket from your local police department. If you have a small crack in your windshield, there are a few things you can do to prevent the crack from spreading before you can take your car in to get the windshield replaced. Here are some steps you can take to keep the crack to a minimum while you wait for repairs.
Keep Your Car Sheltered
Extreme changes in temperature can cause the glass in your windshield to expand and contract, which might cause the crack to become worse. Similarly, the weight of heavy snow can also cause a crack in the glass to become worse over time. Park your car in a garage or carport as much as possible, and protect the windshield from extreme temperatures by parking in the shade when sheltered spots are not an option.
Use An Auto Glass Repair Kit
You can purchase an auto glass repair kit at your local auto parts store. These kits come with a special resin which helps to prevent the crack from spreading, but they do require the use of a drill. If you aren't handy, or if you don't feel comfortable drilling into glass on your car, you'll want to consider a different repair option. Super glue can be a handy alternative if you don't have an auto glass repair kit, and clear nail polish can also prevent the crack in your windshield from becoming larger.
Hire An Auto Glass Replacement Company
If the crack in your windshield is too large for you to manage on your own, or if the crack makes it impossible to see as you are driving, consider calling an auto glass replacement company right away. Some companies can come to your location to replace your windshield, which means you can get back on the road more quickly. If your windshield was broken as part of an act of vandalism or break-in attempt, have the vehicle towed to the auto glass company so you and your car can be in a safe place.
